TIME TO SAY GOODBYE! :(

I’m sure you’ve noticed we’ve been slacking on our posts the last couple of weeks and I thought it was time to tell you what we’ve been up to! In the midst of helping Lisa get settled, I was hired to manage the Las Vegas area for a company called Grocery Smarts! I’ll tell you more about that in a sec, but what this all means is I’m retiring as a regular contributor to our BLOG. And, I’ve hired Lisa to join me as an Instructor, so she’ll be stepping away as well. We will leave everything intact, so you can still access the downloads and reference our previous posts for tips and tricks. We do want you to know more about what we will be doing, though!

Basically, Grocery Smarts has a website that offers FREE listings of local grocery store ads matched with manufacture coupons from the Sunday paper. They mainly operate out of Utah, specifically the greater Salt Lake/Provo/Ogden areas and in St. George. They are currently launching into Las Vegas (thus the reason for my new job)! It’s an awesome concept that I love (and have really already been doing)… we teach FREE classes to organizations and church groups as well as in-home classes to show people how to save big on groceries! Then, on top of that, we are able offer multiple subscription packages from the newspaper.

So, if you live in the Las Vegas area, I’d love to hear from you! Or, if you live in Utah and want to either attend a class or host one, I can connect you with Instructors there. Grocery Smarts may be coming to a city near you, so I’d be happy to pass along your interest in hosting a class or becoming an Instructor to the big wigs over at the office.

I never thought that the a day would come that I would curse my beloved stockpile of toiletries. I am usually doing a victory dance in the parking lot for scoring 6 bottles of shampoo for free, but today I was crying as I had to carry all those boxes up the stairs! And they are not light!

Thankfully... in all of these boxes I have some Excedrin Back & Body. I'm going to need it!

I don't know about you, but I have a lot of recipes that call for the same ingredients. Plus, (like most people) I have a few recipes that I find myself making every week. It seems like I am always running out of these "popular" ingredients and I have found myself buying them weekly.

So, to help get the most out of my budget (and to start building a stockpile of what I use most), I did a quick inventory of my recipes and actually created a "top 5 most used pantry ingredients" list. Now that I know what I use the most, I will buy and totally stockpile these items when they go on sale. Now I am saving money on my weekly budget, and I also have a great supply of what I use the most, and always have it on hand when I need it.

Here is my TOP 5:

Soy Sauce
Peanut Butter
Spaghetti Sauce

What's a Case Lot Sale?

We had a couple of commenters ask what a Case Lot sale was (referring to a post we did a few days ago)... so I figured there could be more readers that didn't know about them as well... so here's a quick explanation:

A "caselot" sale is when a store sells a selection of products by the case. For example, last Fall, at Kroger, I got a case of Mac N Cheese (50 boxes) for $12. I got a case of Betty Crocker Cake mixes (I think it had 10 or 12 boxes) for $5. I got a case of Cream of Chicken soup (with 24 cans) for $12. Watch the price per ounce or the price each - as some of the pricing can be confusing. Sometimes alot of the caselot selection is store brand items, but you can definitely save big! If you don't know if the stores you shop host these types of sales, just stop by the customer service desk next time you are there and ask if they ever do and when they typically have them. For any store I shop, this is typcially a "once a year" deal.

I was blog hopping today and I ran across this post on my friend Erica's blog and I had to share it with you. She did a great price comparison on Kroger vs. Walmart to see if couponing is worth it (literally) for her. Here's what she posted:

"So recently Kroger (a local grocery store) had a great sale and a lot of my coupons matched up to make them even better deals! Here's a picture of what I bought at the grocery store.

For all of the products in this picture I paid $5.25! I was very excited about how much I was able to get. Then I decided it would be fun to check the prices of these products at Wal-Mart to see how good a deal I really got...Drum roll Please...At Wal-Mart (using no coupons - just their everyday low prices) I would have spent $29.69 + tax. If I used the same coupons as I did at Kroger I still would have spent 22.09 + tax!! By matching coupons to a good sale at the grocery store I saved our family an additional $16.84 (and that was just one of my transactions)!! So to answer my title question - YES - for our family and because I love it, couponing and watching the sales are definitely worth it. I LOVE a good deal!"

Did you know that many of the ECB deals (both weekly and monthly) have unrestricted limits even though the ad may say, "Limit 2 per household". If you look at the bottom of your CVS receipt, unless it says "*Offer Limit Reached" you can still buy more and still earn the advertised ECB's!

Don't go overboard, but give it a try and watch your ECB Summary closely to know when your limits are ACTUALLY reached!

This Week's CVS Scenerio (and lesson)

I had trouble topping last week's trip to CVS (91% savings is tough to beat) but I gave it a fair shot. I think shopping and saving BIG at CVS is easy once you get a hang of their system. And, did you know you don’t need ECB’s (Extra Care Bucks) when you walk in the door to hit a savings home run? Here's my scenario for this week (8/10-17) and I have ZERO ECB's to start with!

Do you like to register for free samples? I do. Not only does the sample allow you to try out the product, it usually comes with a high value coupon to use on a future purchase. Just recently I got a sample for Playtex Gentile Glide Tampoons and a MQ for $1/1. While I was a little disappointed with the sample size, I have to say that I was thrilled with the coupon. Plus it expires on 12/31/09. So the next time you have the opportunity to get a free sample by mail, sign up because the value is more than you think.

101 Coupon Tips & Tricks

We’re trying to collect a complete list of tips and tricks for successful couponing. I pulled some from previous posts to get us started… we’d love you to add more in a comment!

1. Manufacture and store coupons can be combined or stacked.

2. Shop at the beginning of the week to maximize your chances of having everything you need in stock.

3. Register for EVERY customer rewards program for each store you shop.

4. Keep restaurant and other retail coupons in your purse at all times!

5. Use coupon clipping services to stock up on coupons for products you use regularly.

6. Get 1 newspaper for every 3 to 4 people in your household (for the coupons of course!)

7. Clip and file your coupons every week – don’t get behind!

8. Find an organization system that works for you, otherwise you won’t stick to it.

9. Involve your little ones, let them play with expired coupons and help you cut scraps.

10. For quick clipping, trim the edge off the insert first.

11. Take advantage of the weekly sales/deals at multiple stores to get the best overall product selection.

12. Learn and utilize store reward/rebate programs like ECB’s for CVS and EasySaver for Walgreens.

13. Carry the Wal-Mart Coupon Policy with you whenever you use coupons at Wal-Mart!

14. Always use online coupon codes when making online purchases.

15. Build a stockpile at home.

16. Stick to your shopping list.

Are you a Cherry Picker?

Growing up, my mom only bought certain brands of household items. She bought Cascade, Tide, Bounce, Windex, Crest, Zest and Dove to name a few. So when I got married and began buying my own household items, I naturally went for the things my mom bought. I can remember thinking that, "If my mom bought it, then it must be the best."

So, are you loyal to all your favorite brands? I would certainly call myself a "cherry picker" or brand loyalist when it comes to certain products (like chicken stock or OJ), but for the most part a have shifted my brand loyalties to coupons and sale loyalties! And, because I am willing to try new products (when they are the best value) I have come across some gems that I would have never tried if they weren't on sale (and stacked with a coupon of course)! Plus, since I have started couponing and have branched out to buy a variety of products... I've learned that they are just as good, if not better, than what I previously believed were the best.

Here are a few of the gems that I have found, tried and LOVED since I started couponing:

ELECTRASOL - I love Electrasol and the $2.25 MQ from the 7/10 Smart Source makes me like it even more. If you haven't used your MQ yet, they expired on 8/10 so get to the store and save big with this coupon. (Plus, some Target locations have it on sale for $2.79)!

AQUAFRESH EXTREME CLEAN - My husband has found that he loves the new Aquafresh Extreme Clean Toothpaste. He has never been a big fan of Aquafresh, but when I got 4 tubes for free, he was forced to try it at least once. It has replaced the Colgate that he used for years, and he is now worried that we only have 2 tubes left. Click HERE to print your Extreme Clean coupon so you can try it today.

PUREX - I have also come to like Purex Laundry Detergent and it seems to get my clothes just as clean as if I were using Tide. Savings & Budget Tracker

Keeping an accurate record of my spending is very important to me. So, in a constant effort to stay organized, I am always testing new ways to track my savings, record my spending, and understand how my results match up to my goals. So, when I posted our first download (the Shopping List Planner) a few days ago and got such a huge response, I thought my Savings & Budget Tracker would be a nice addition to that.

Basically, my tracker combines all the necessary pieces of information that will tell you how much you spend and how much you save. Then, by adding a running balance column (used just like a traditional check register) it allows you to know exactly how close you are to staying within your budget every month. I love this tool (and so does my husband)! If you click on the graphic above, you can see a sample month all filled out.

If you are like me, you have lots of personal care products floating around (that you paid little or nothing for). I am constantly thinking of ways I can be resourceful and use what I have purchased, so today I decided to put together an emergency over-night pack! I’m going to keep it in the closet by our front door, so in case we are ever in a situation where we need to pick up and go, I can just grab my pack and know I have some personal care essentials at my fingertips. You can build one that fits your needs, but here’s what I put in mine to get you started with some ideas:

Variety of travel size products (shampoo, soap, deodorant)

Diapers & Wipes

I didn’t put these things in today, but would like to add a change of clothes for everyone and possible a small bag of crayons/pencils and coloring books, a couple of children’s books, and maybe a flashlight. I add these to my shopping list and watch for good deals.

How to Organize Coupons

There are lots of ways to organize coupons.

Here’s a run down of the 4 most common.

Folder Method
With this method, you simply label a manila folder with the Insert Name & Date it appeared in the paper. Each insert (or at least each week) should get it’s own folder.

PRO’s
Extremely time efficient, no cutting or filing
Very inexpensive
Virtually no effort to maintain

CON’s

You never know what you have
May miss good deals because you don’t know what’s in each insert

You’ll spend time locating coupons you need

It is difficult or unpractical to take to the store with you

You’ll have to hang on to the insert until all the coupons inside have expired

TIP

The Coupon Mom has a “Virtual Coupon Organizer” that works perfectly with this method. All you have to do (after you fill out a lengthy but free registration) is go into her organizer, search a product, and it’ll tell you if a coupon is out there, what it’s worth, when it expires and what date it appeared in the Sunday Paper.

Shoe Box Method
With this method, you cut your coupons and file (by category) in envelops. Many couponers have found it helpful to cut the flap off the envelop and tape an index card (tall side up) on the inside; then label your category on the top of the card.

PRO’s
Very inexpensive and easy to put together
Because all coupons are cut and sorted, they are easy to find

CON’s

Cutting & organizing takes a weekly time commitment

You’ll probably cut and file a lot of coupons you will never use

TIP
Some couponers use a combination of the File Method and the Shoe Box Method. They clip and organize the coupons they are most likely to use in the shoe box, then file the remainder of the uncut insert in a date labeled folder.

Check or Accordian Filer Method
This is essentially the same method as the Shoe Box & shares the same benefits.

Several weeks ago I invited several friends over to teach them how to master the art of couponing. They were all interested in what I’ve been doing and wanted the scoop. So, we all brought a snack and for 2 hours we sat down and went through the basics of couponing, how to get organized, how to make shopping lists, etc. We had a great time and the best part was, none of my friends’ husbands objected to them coming to learn how to save money! (You know how they can be when they know you are going to a party where you typically order something!) So, think about hosting a coupon party at your house! Teach your friends and family what you do, how you get organized, and what motivates you to keep going. Maybe down the road your coupon party could turn into a monthly coupon swap!

2008 STATE SALES TAX HOLIDAY

Over a year ago I moved to Texas with my family and was introduced to the STATE SALES TAX HOLIDAY. I had never heard of this "holiday" before but was glad for the opportunity to participate in the savings. Luckily, Texas is not the only state that participates in this holiday. Right now, 15 states and the District of Columbia celebrate.

So what is the state sales tax holiday? Each summer just before school starts, participating states SUSPEND sales tax on things such as school supplies, clothing, and computers. Nice huh!!! According to an article on MSN the holiday was started to, "soften the blow of back-to-school costs for parents while boosting sales for local retailers." It seems that this holiday was made for Extreme Shoppers like ourselves.

Are you wondering if you are going to be able to participate in the savings like me? Here is a list of participating states - Alabama, Connecticut, Georgia, Iowa, Louisiana, Missouri, New Mexico, North Carolina, South Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Virgina, West Virgina and the District of Columbia. So if you live in one of these states, go check our the full MSN article HERE to see when your holiday is. Hurry FAST as some start as early as AUGUST 1.

The article also gives some great tips on how to take advantage of the tax suspension.

See if the holiday applies to local city and county taxes too. The state leaves it up to the individual cities and counties to make the decision if they are to participate.

Check for exemptions. One states definition of clothing may differ from another.

Review your receipt to make sure you were not over charged on the tax.

Skip the stores and shop online. Any online stores has to waive taxes if you make a purchase on your tax holiday.

We have seen some great sales at Target, Walgreen's and more on school supplies, but here is an extra opportunity to save even more. For those of you that have school age children, you know how fast the cost of school clothes and supplies can add up. So this holiday gives us an extra opportunity to save even more. Wednesday's shopping trips were SIMPLY FRUSTRATING!!! Items were not in stock at Kroger and my coupons were being rejecected left and right at Target. My overall savings still averaged 60% so it was by no means a total failure, but I wasn't able to get everything on my list. I wanted to pulled my hair out and scream at the top of my lungs while I was walking out of Target. Childish? Yes!!! But it would have made me feel better.

So when you have a frustrating shopping trip and want to toss your coupons in the garbage (like me today), just remember . . . not every shopping trip has to produce a "trophy receipt," and not every shopping trip will go as smoothly as you had planned. Forget about the frustrations and look foward to next week's ads because you could pull off your best savings ever. After all, isn't that what we EXTREME SHOPPERS live for?

How do U get Way More 4 Way Less?

I made a couple of quick trips (one to Smith's/Kroger and one to Target) and ended up spending under $50 for $130 worth of groceries and cleaning supplies. How did I do so well? By stacking, of course! Now, I won't detail my transaction because the sale at Kroger ends on Tuesday, but I will say everything I bought was on sale, I had a coupon for everything but the milk and bread, and (with the exception of the milk & bread) everything I bought earned an instant reward at the register. It's all about stacking!

How did I plan my trip? Well, this particular week I did it myself. I scoured the ad when I first got it last week and quickly ordered multiple coupons from http://www.thecouponclippers.com/ . Coupon clipping services are awesome for this very reason. I don't use them very often, but when products I use regularly publish a coupon, I actually "stock up" on the coupon too.

Typically, though, I am a "Grocery Gamer". I've been a member for over a year and love their service. Basically, every week, a spreadsheet comes out that itemizes all the items in the ads, matches them with current coupons, AND tells you whether this it is a good sale price or a rock-bottom sale price. This service only costs $1 to try for 4 weeks, then costs about $3 per week if you accessed 4 store lists. For me, the cost is worth it. It saves me hours in scouring blogs, websites, ads, coupon indexes, etc every week. Plus, you get free subscription weeks for referring friends.

Although http://www.thegrocerygame.com/ is my main source of sale/deal info, I supplement it by scouring the ads myself, checking other blogs for scenerio ideas, and by seeing what Lisa buys (really, truly)! She's good and she always puts things together that I miss somehow!

The Coupon Mom also provides a shopping list matched with coupons, although it isn't as user friendly, it is a free service. Coupon Sense is a similar site, as is Grocery Smarts. There's lots of resources out there, what do you use?

Creative Uses for Toothpaste...

So... Lisa and I are constantly being teased (actually a better word may be harrassed) by our hubbies for buying (actually getting FREE) soooo much toothpaste. "Come on," I keep telling him, "If there is a disaster, we'll barter it for our neighbor's filtered pool water!"

Anyway, to be armed with more reasons to continue taking advantage of every awesome toothpaste deal, I set out today to find more practical uses for toothpaste. And, in my quest, I found a pretty interesting one (plus 16 more).

So basically, you take toothpaste and in a circular motion, rub it on a scratched DVD or CD. Rinse off completely, dry with a soft cloth and VIOLA - good as new, no more skips! I figured that trying it on a scratched DVD wasn't going to ruin it anymore than it already was, so I made "Chicken Little" (a family favorite) the guinea pig. And... it totally worked! We watched the movie clear through and the four parts that normally skip, sailed right through smoothly! How do people think up these things?

PS - Personally, I'd stay clear of toothpastes that are gritty. And for anyone wondering what I used... Aquafresh Extreme Clean (yep, the free one from June's CVS's ECB deal)!

CVS Extra Care Buck Program Overview

So are you new the the couponing world and are wondering how you can get diapers and wipes for $0.39 a pack like I did on my 6/3/08 CVS shopping trip HERE. Well, wonder no more as I will try to help you master the CVS game so you can score big like I did.

According to an article released on July 16th, 2008 by CVS Care Mark, CVS has given $1.5 billion in Extra Care Bucks (ECB) over the past year. This makes the ECB reward program the biggest out there so it is time to jump on the bandwagon (see full article HERE).

The first thing you need to do is sign up for CVS's Extra Care customer reward program HERE. This program offers ECB's for the things you buy. You will get a card or key chain card (as shown above) that needs to become part of your everyday life. Without this card, ECB's do not exist.

You can earn ECB's three different ways. 1) Earn 2% back with every purchase at CVS in store and/or online. This 2% is given back every quarter. 2) Earn 1 Extra Buck for every 2 prescriptions purchased in-store and online and 3) Earn ECB for things you buy as advertised in the weekly and monthly ads. This way is the easiest way to earn ECB, in my opinion. All ECB's are printed at the bottom of your receipts. The ECB's act as coupons for future purchases of any product. They do have an expiration date, like most coupons, but I don't think expiring ECB's will be a problem once you get the hang of the game.

Here are three tips and tricks you need to know while shopping at CVS. I remembered them today as I was getting peeved at my CVS for the lack of sale items to choose from.

Shop at the beginning of the week to maximize your chance of having all sale items in stock.
Ask a CVS associate to check the back when a product gone.
If the sale item is gone, ask for a rain check (I always forget this one until I am home)

TARGET TOY CLEARANCE SALE!

I was at Target, cruising the toy aisles, and found TONS and TONS of toys on CLEARANCE! Some prices were good, some were great, and some were as much as 75% off! I'm talking Pet Shops, Ponies, various Action Figures, etc. I spoke to an associate and he said they are clearing room for Christmas floor sets and new movie merchandise.

I checked the clearance section online as well, and there were hundreds of toys up for grabs for as much as 75% off too. So, time to stock up on stocking stuffers or to maybe start a little stash of inexpensive toys for chore rewards, birthday parties, and other gift giving occasions.

Hurry, I doubt the selection will stay long.

Keeping Control at the Grocery Store

Do you ever feel like your cart is full of chickens? I do! Here’s a few tips to keep your coup in control and get you out of the store as soon as possible. Plus, the longer you stay, the more you spend… so it’s always wise to keep your trips short and concise!

1. Plan ahead, know the ads, know what you need and organize a complete list. The worst thing you can do for your budget and your little chickens is wander up and down the aisles.

2. Pull your coupons before you get to the store and attach them to your list. I always see shoppers sifting through a filer or envelops; struggling to see whether they have a coupon for a sale item. This takes so much time and if you’ve got little ones, they are going to get bored and fly the coup!

3. Always grab an ad on your way in the store (or bring it from home). I hate having to trek to the front of the store to double check something I thought I saw in the ad that’s not marked on the aisle.

4. Let your little ones hold something they like or choose something you are buying. For example, if Betty Crocker fruit snacks are on sale and you have coupons for 4 boxes, let them choose the variety they want – then let them hold a box. I don’t know about your baby chicks, but mine love to help!

5. Give your little ones the coupons you aren’t going to use, or pull a blinkie for them to hold. One time, I let my 6 year old hold the coupons as I picked up the item. Trust me, not a good idea. They had all mysteriously disappeared by the time we got to the register!

6. And... of course, when all else fails, pull a dum-dum sucker out of your purse!

The bottom line for me (and this trick works every time) is to BE ORGANIZED. When I walk into a store, know what I need, feel like my list is complete and my coupons are in order, I have a successful shopping trip and it keeps the kid craziness (and my total OOP) to a minimum.

There are many things that make me and Colette"Extreme Shoppers". One of them is that we have "I TAKE THEM WITH ME EVERYWHERE" coupons. We both have a small 4x7 mini-check sorter (find them at Target's dollar spot for a buck) that fits nicely in our purse. We keep store, fast food, pharmacy and service coupons in it (i.e Bed Bath and Beyond, Micheal's, Baskin Robins, Oil Change, CVS ECB's, etc). It is even where we keep our copy of the Wal-Mart Coupon Policy (if you don't have it, print it HERE)! We found that we were always leaving these types of coupons at home, and missing out on savings. So, being "Extreme Shoppers", we knew we needed a convenient solution. The mini-check sorter has worked out great for sorting and storing coupons that we don't use at the grocery store, but that can be used every day. Try it out and you will start to see savings in other areas of your family budget AND you will get one step closer to being an EXTREME SHOPPER!

If you are like me... I love an IP (Internet printable coupon). In fact, I bet last week, I used more IP's in one week than the entire previous month combined! I've had a problem or two using them, but have generally had a very positive experience with no issues. And, I plan to keep using them as much as I can. However, based on a story Lisa saw aired by ABC's Good Morning America regarding counterfeit coupons, we all should be more vigilant when collecting our printable Q's. As the story advised, here are a few guidelines to consider when printing Internet coupons...

CALLING ALL TOOTHBRUSHES!

One of my closest friends (and coincidentally, the one that taught me how to coupon like a champ) is traveling to Honduras with her dental school husband (he goes to UMKC) on a Dental Outreach Program to Honduras. Last year, this program offered free dental care to over a 1,000 people (including kids)! For many, this was the only time in their life they had received proper dental care. Wild, huh!

This year, Vicki gets to go with her hubby and one of her responsibilities will be to teach children how to properly brush their teeth. So, the Outreach Program has been collecting toothbrushes, but STILL NEEDS MORE... LOTS MORE! And... because we all have like 20 free toothbrushes lurking under our bathroom sinks, I thought this would be a GREAT time to give back and send as many toothbrushes as we can to this awesome program!! We have to hurry, though. Okay… This was the sale of all sales and when it came around, I knew I was going to score BIG. Why? Lots of reasons! I’ll list them so you’ll understand why I was excited about this sale and how I got $174.51 worth of groceries for only $41.93! (And that was even with a few mistakes that I need to go back and correct at the store, my total will be around $32 once corrected).

1. P&G releases a coupon insert on the first Sunday of EVERY month, so when any store runs a P&G promotion, you know you are already going to have tons of coupons to use. Plus, because I usually get 2 or 3 papers, I know I’m going to be able to buy in multiples of the things I need and want.

2. With P&G eSaver (digital coupon program for Kroger stores) and Shortcuts.com which mimics several current paper coupons, I knew I’d also have some I could products I’d be able to STACK paper coupons with digital ones. This is awesome for me because none of the stores in my area double coupons.

3. A P&G Promo (at any store) generally means 2 things; P&G products will be on sale AND there is likely to be some kind of incentive or reward at the register. This particular sale offered $3 instant savings at the register for every 3 products purchased.

4. As a total BONUS, I just received my P&G Promo Mailer (register for it here) which had way better value coupons than the coupons I got in the paper.

5. Then, I used several Internet printables (IP) as well… my links are in the transaction.

I discovered a simple and quick tip that has shaved a few minutes off my coupon clipping... trim the spine of the insert off! No more fussing with the awkwardness of clipping coupons where 2 pages are connected. Plus, if you are clipping more than one insert at a time, it makes it MUCH easier to keep them together for a straight cut all the way through!

I too, at the polite request of my hubby, have curtailed my toothpaste purchases (no matter how good the deal is). However, this week, I couldn't pass up 3 more free tubes at Vons. In fact, when I got home from shopping, I put the tubes away immediately so he wouldn't notice! Oh, brother. :)

MEETING AN EXTREME SHOPPER!!!

One of the many aspects I love about my shopping trips, besides the savings, is meeting more and more "Extreme Shoppers" like me. It seems that couponing has such a negative undertone. However, there are great people like you and me out shopping with coupons to make a difference for our family, and turning the world of couponing into a positive. "Extreme Shoppers" are easy to spot and I find myself looking for you. We usually have ads and coupons in hand, we are studying the product to make sure we have the right item, and we anxiously await the total OOP. Some "Extreme Shoppers" may have a victory dance and if you are like me you wait until you get the car to celebrate.

Today, while at Kroger, I meet an "extreme shopper" who was parked in front of the Herbal Essence selection just like me. We didn't talk much, but she was very friendly and was very nice to talk to. It made my shopping trip even better. I only wish I could have seen her total OOP and savings %. By the looks of her cart, it should have been awesome. As I was leaving I mentioned the FREE Slurpee deal and she said, "we are heading there when we are done here." See I told you, we are all alike!!!

I picked up a copy of Women’s Day magazine this week because the cover had an eye-catching headline of “184 Money Saving Ideas”. Overall, the magazine was definitely worth the $2.79 I paid for it. It was a bit of an ego boost as we already incorporate many of the ideas into our regular life. My hubby and I have always been resourceful (I like that word better than frugal) and are always looking for ways to save for our future and our kids’ future. Although we believe we do a good job, we are always open to learning more secrets and tips. Okay, I always remember last minute to get my Walgreens Easy Saver Rebate sent in, so I thought a quick reminder might be useful to someone. The catalog asks to have your submission postmarked by July 5th - but, if you haven't had a chance or have forgotten, don't give up... send it in anyway. Honestly, I have 4 kids and a crazy schedule and I don't believe I've ever mailed mine by the postmark date and I've never had a problem getting it back. Thankfully, they are pretty reasonable and have never denied me my rebate. If you can't find your booklet, I checked their website and you can download it from there. Click HERE to print your copy.

Never used the Walgreens Rebate Program? It's awesome. Just pick up (or download from their website) a copy of the Easy Saver Catalog. It's packed with tons of store coupons and great rebates. I recently read an article on Yahoo called 10 REASONS TO LOVE A RECESSION. I found the article very interesting and would like to highlight my favorite point. It gave me a better perspective and gave me even more umph to add to my love of getting

WAY MORE 4 WAY LESS.

My favorite reason was MORE COUPONS. Who can complain about getting more coupons? The good deals and steals we get every week come from the manufactures and stores offering more coupons. Yes, the coupons are issued to get us to buy a certain products or to get us into a certain stores, but in the long run they can save us big bucks. Peter Meyers, Marketing Vice President at ICOM says, "Coupons can save the average family 25 percent on their grocery bill, or $2,400 a year based on an $800 monthly outlay. How's that for an economic stimulus?"

Curious about how my own coupon usage compared to his comment, I checked my tracker and this year alone, I have used over $600 in coupons. $600!!!! That is almost three of my car payments. CrAzY!!!! So keep clipping and storing those coupons. Take advange of the savings manufactures and stores are offering to help your family through the good and bad times.

I live in Las Vegas and we only get SmartSource inserts in our paper… no, really. RedPlum and P&G started disappearing earlier this year and they are now showing up in mailboxes randomly as junk mail. Funny thing is, some of my neighbors get them and some don’t. I’ve made a million phone calls and can’t get on the mailing list to save my life! One baffling thing is what is coming in the mail is very different and smaller that what comes out in the paper. CVS THROWS ME A CURVE BALL

I love CVS and the savings I get, but I HATE when I get to the store and half of the items I was going to buy are not in stock. I am not trying to complain, but come on CVS get with it and make sure the items in the weekly ad are well stocked.

When I shop at CVS, I have a list in hand with all sorts of figures on it. Like what I am going to pay for a product, what MQ I am going to use, how many ECB's I will use and how many I should get back. When an item is not in stock it throws me off completely and I have to start from scratch at the store to get my figures right again. HOW FRUSTRATING!!!

Yesterday, I went to CVS to take advantage of my $4/$20 coupon they e-mailed me and to recycle my ECB's that were about expire. I decided to try out a new shopping strategy, still frustrating, but it worked a bit better. I made a list of potential items that I wanted to buy and that gave me back ECB's. I gathered the matching MQ and headed for the store. When I arrived at the store, I looked for each item on the list and if they had it, I added it to my cart and made a new list of purchased items. As soon as I had the right $ amount I checked out. Only one of the items on my potential purchase list was in stock so I really had to restrategize. I ended up walking out of the store with more ECB than I walked in with so it was a successful trip. See my shopping summary below.

Sorting Cards & the Binder System

Lisa teased me awhile back about being skeptical about her binder organizing system. I’ve been using (and loving) my accordian check filers for nearly a year and they have accommodated my needs just fine. However, recently I’ve felt a little frustrated when sifting through stacks of coupons to find the ones I need (especially when it comes to quick trips to the store for a few things that I KNOW I have coupons for). So, I’ve been working to convert to her system and in the process, I came up with an easy sorting method and I love it! I always seem to have a million piles going and using sorting cards makes it quick and easy to get everything in the right place. Plus, I have my sorting cards color-coded to match the categories I set up in my binder to make it even quicker. Lisa loved the idea and has hers done already. Here are her pics.

WAL-MART COUPON POLICY

I think that shopping at Wal-Mart is a double edge sword. They do have the lowest everyday prices for most items, however the customer service is horrible. I hate waiting in their long lines just to be greeted by a miserable employee that rejects more than half of my coupons in hand.

With the rejection of coupons pilling up, I stopped using them at WM. I know, me not use coupons, CrAzY, but true. It seemed that the time I spent finding the coupons was just wasted because every time I tried to use coupons, they were rejected for one reason or another. Colette experienced similar problems at WM that led to much frustration and a loss of $15.00 in coupons in one shopping trip.

Then I came across the Wal-Mart coupon policy online. It states in the policy that they accept printed online coupons, B1G1 coupons and much more. See the full policy HERE. Colette and I have printed the policy and keep it in our wallets. This seems a little extreme to carry the coupon policy of WM on us at all time, but a rejected coupon here or there can result in the loss of $50.00 a year. Colette is already at a loss of about $25.00. And when you are trying to be frugal and stick to a budget, losing money on coupons shouldn't be a worry.

So the next time you are shopping at WM with coupons and one gets rejected that shouldn't, nicely tell the cashier that you have the coupon policy and show them. Hopefully this tip will help you get Way More 4 Way Less while shopping at Wal-Mart.

I love involving my girls (ages 4 and 6) with my coupons. I want to teach them to be wise and resourceful, plus I know it makes them feel important that I “need” their help. At first, I got the girls little index card portfolios at the store. It was a great idea, but they were soon lost. So, I have them use envelopes now and they seem to like them just as much. It’s simple, whenever I’m clearing out expired coupons; I let them choose the ones they want to collect. Then, when we shop, I take a few out so they think they are contributing. Plus, for a kindergartener and a preschooler, it’s been great number practice and we’ve been able to incorporate the value of coupons into learning about coins and counting. As a bonus, this also helps keep them focused and entertained at the store!

THE KEY TO MY COUPON SUCCESS IS…

I’ve love teaching friends and family how to get to most out of their coupons. In fact, it’s definitely surpassed a hobby and is becoming an obsession! Anyway, one of the most common questions I get from my coupon prodigies is, “Am I doing this right? I don’t think I am saving as much as you!” First, remember that learning how to do it takes time and practice, but you’ll find that each week you’ll get quicker at identifying good sales. Second, you’ll be able to take advantage of more sales once your supply of coupons grows. Third, finding (and maintaining) a good coupon organizing system that works for you is essential. If you can’t see it or find it, you can’t use it.

Once you have those things tackled… I believe the most important skill to master is STACKING. The more you stack, the more you save! “Stacking” is simply combining as many incentives as possible in a single transaction. By taking sale prices and adding store coupons, manufacture coupons, rebate programs and store rewards programs you can get almost anything for next to nothing. To look at a real life example, if you look at Friday’s (6/27) Walgreens post, you can see that I stacked, stacked, stacked:

1. I only bought items that were on sale.
2. I used an MQ or StQ for nearly every item I bought.
3. I used a “$5 off a $20” store coupon emailed to me by Walgreens.
4. I used a $2 Register Reward earned by splitting my transaction into 2 purchases.
5. I used $10 in previously earned rebates on my Walgreens Gift Card.

So, I not only took advantage of the sale prices and my coupons, I also used Register Rewards, Walgreens Rebates and the gravy for me was the $5 coupon. The best part about stacking (other than it saves you a ton at the register) is I was able to get Pull-Ups (something I “needed”) for less than a dollar. If you look at the transaction, the Pull-ups were on sale for $9.49. Not a great sale price by any means, plus other than the soda it was the only other thing I didn’t have a coupon for (perplexing, I know). However, the beauty of this transaction was that I not only needed the Pull-Ups (desperately), I also needed something (some Couponers call it a “filler”) to extend my total to the $20 purchase requirement. Then, as the post shows, when all was said and done, the average I paid for each item was a mere $0.76! Beat that, Wal-Mart!

While I was at Walmart picking up my weekly newspaper for the coupons I decided to get some supplies for my church's 4th of July Parade on Friday. I want my kids to wear something patriotic in the parade so I went to see what they had. On CLEARANCE FOR $2.00 were some really cute shirts. They also had adult sizes for $3.00. What a great deal!!! I picked up a shirt for me and my kids. We are going to look so cute all matchy matchy.

USING ONLINE COUPON CODES

I am a huge fan of using "coupon codes" when shopping online. I have made it apart of my online shopping experience as it has saved me on shipping or up to 25% off the cost of my purchase.

So what is an online coupon code? An online coupon code works just like a paper coupon. A specific $ amount or % is discounted from your purchase at the time of check out.

According to an online article by ABC, only 38% of Americans use coupon codes when shopping online. It seems that many Americans are not familiar with online coupon codes and the positive effect they can have on your shopping experience.

Here are some tips and tricks to using coupon codes.

Research the coupon code sites to find the best code that works for your purchase. Code comparison will get you the best deal possible. Two of my favorite coupon code sites are www.retailmenot.com & www.currentcodes.com

Make sure to bookmark the coupon code sites that you like the best so they will be accessible when you are ready to shop.

Make sure you are not using an expired coupon code. Just as paper coupons expire, so do online coupon codes. There is nothing more frustrating than to find an awesome coupon code then not being able to use it at check out, as it is expired.

An online purchase paired with an online coupon code could get you a better deal than buying the item at the actual store. Check online before heading to the store. It may save yourself time and money by shopping online.

Watch out for shipping rates. You do not want the shipping and handling to out way the savings of the coupon or buying direct from the store.

Buy utilizing the various coupon codes that the Internet has to offer, you could be getting WAY MORE 4 WAY LESS!!!

8 DAY VACTION FOR UNDER $1000

We just got back from a 8 day trip to Denver, Colorado (800 miles from our home) for less than $1000. First, we have a family of 6 and when we originally starting looking at what this trip was going to cost, we figured it would be over $3500. That was a jaw-dropper (not to mention a deal-breaker) but that was before I got creative. Here’s what we did to knock over $2500 off the cost of our trip and we didn’t skimp on fun!

Our biggest savings, and most obvious savings, came from driving instead of flying (the 10 hour drive there was exhausting with the kids, but WELL worth the savings)! Plus, we packed coolers instead of hitting drive-thrus.

We rented a home outside the city, in the mountains with other family members and by splitting the cost, we saved hundreds over the cost of an average hotel. Plus, had 5 star accommodations and a full kitchen.

We planned a full menu, grocery shopped (with coupons) and split the bill. We also picked up stuff for packing lunches each day and goodies for snacks. This also saved hundreds of dollars.

We researched the activities we wanted to do (Denver Zoo and WaterWorld) and found 2 for 1 deals, discounts for bringing in canned goods, and coupons online. For our family of 6, we saved over $200 in park entry fees. Plus, we packed our coolers for lunch and snacks.

Two of the days we did “family friendly free” activities like playing tennis, rock climbing, visiting a local State Park, throwing rocks in the Colorado River, we also planned picnics, played lots of board games, and overall had a fantastic time.

Lastly, we kept a good eye on the gas stations and new exactly where to fill up on the way home!

I am trying not to coupon as a move out of state is coming up. I want to eat down my stockpile so I have less to pack. TO CVS OR TO NOT CVS

I think that I will skip shopping at CVS this week. I am already stocked up on June monthly deals and it looks like I can pass on this weeks deals as they do not look so appealing (especially with the $3/$15 Q gone). The candy deal of buy $10 worth of Candy and get $5.00 ECB seems like a good deal to roll lasts weeks ECB'S into, but to tell the truth I enjoyed the candy way more than anyone in my family. So I think I will pass on the stockpiling of candy.

Skipping a week or two at CVS, as long as your ECB's don't expire, is not a bad thing. It will help you keep perspective on what you have stockpiled. I find that I get caught up on buying what I don't need just because the deal "IS JUST TOO GOOD TO PASS UP." I have found that skipping a shopping week at CVS helps me reevaluate my purpose of shopping the deals. I can then can start shopping again with the right attitude and purpose, to save my family money.

So the next time you think the CVS deals are just mediocre, skip the shopping routine and enjoy what you already have.

Going to a baseball game is one of my family's favorite past times, but it can be very expensive once you walk through the gates. The cost of food is outrageous inside the ballpark. As a way to be able to enjoy some games this summer, I pack a backpack full of snacks and meals to help off set the cost of ballpark food. This idea could be used when heading to the Zoo, state fair, or even the local swimming pool.

Here is a list of ways to help pack your perfect ballpark backpack to help save you some money.

Contact your local ballpark to see if outside food and beverage is permitted. I was able to get the info off of the official website for the team.
Plan out what you want to take to the ballpark to snack on and shop accordingly.
On the morning of the game, put beverages in the freezer to help keep them chilled throughout the game.
Make sandwiches or heat up some chicken nuggets for your main meal. My kids will eat room temperature nuggets so this is a great convenient meal for them.
Throw in a few fruit cups so you can get something good into your kid's bellies, but DON'T FORGET A SPOON
Make sure to pack some treats. You need to be able to pull out something just as appealing as the cotton candy or ice cream that all other children are eating. Avoid chocolate treats as they will melt. I like to take rice crispy treats, popcorn, granola bars or smarties.
Pack extra wet wipes to be used as napkins.

CUTTING COUPONS

After showing you how I store my coupons, I thought it would be helpful to see how I cut and organize them.

I get 4 sets of coupons every week. I live the in the DFW area. The local paper has what they call a "Double Sunday" edition. You get the "Early Sunday" edition, which come out on Saturday afternoon and the "Sunday" edition for $1.99. I buy two of the double issue packs on Monday morning at my local Walmart for $4.00. I have definitely seen my savings go up since I have more than one coupon per item.

So the first thing I do is group and stack all the coupons together.

Then I separate the matching pages and staple to coupons together. Be sure to staple over the products picture and not the bar code or expiration date.

Then, I cut out all the coupons.

Next, I sort the coupons out into the categories I have in my binder.

Finally, I put the coupons into the binder. While I do this, I scan the other coupons on the page so I can pull out the expired ones.

COUPON STORAGE

I have been couponing for about a year. I have had many different storing systems, but I finally found one that worked just right for me, the binder system.

I started out storing my coupons in an envelopes that I stored inside a photo box. Then I tried using a accordion check filer. I ended up with 2, one for food and grocery and one for personal hygiene. Finally after much frustration over never finding the coupons I needed or spending too much time sifting through my huge piles, I came across the binder system and I never looked back. I am still trying to convince my sister it is the way to store coupons, but she is still a little sceptical.

It cost me about $30 to make the switch over, so I spent less on my grocery budget the next week to make up for the difference. I think that over all, I spent more time sorting my coupons, but in the end I spend less time looking for my coupons. Here are some pictures of my system.

Here is my coupon binder. I love that everything I need for couponing is stored so nicely inside the binder. I use the outside pocket to hold my paper clips.

I store my scissors, calculator and pens in the front storage. It is nice to always have my supplies with me wherever I go.
Inside there is a nice accordion file where I store my weekly ads. I also put my Walgreen's Easy Saver booklet and CVS monthly deal ad in here. I never have to wonder where I put the ads again.
I use baseball card organizers to store my coupons. I love these binder pages as they have 9 slots per page. This way I can see every coupon I have and it only takes seconds to find it. I have never misplaced a coupon this way. My husband never thought that his baseball card collection could spill over into my coupon collection. It is up for debate as to witch one is more valuable.
I bought self adhesive tabs to divide out my sections. I think that this process is still a work in progress, but what I have still works.
